Active Air had the privledge of providing the temporary climate control for the shooting structures in the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
The whole project stretched over 2 years with the breakout of COVID-19 across the world playing a big factor. The job initially commenced in October 2019 and was completed in October 2021.
The planning for this porject was very short, we were initially contacted and engaged in October 2019, planning and design was comploted in November and by December we had 10 off 40 foot containers full of our equipment packed and shipped to Japan. A total of 6 chillers, 14 Air handling units, 860m of fabric ducting, 5km of chilled water hose equalling a total cpacity of 3,250kW of cooling solutions.
The design requirements in Japan are considerably different to Australia with extreme heat in summer months accompanied by high humidity, high winds and high rainfall.
Our Managers and supervisors arrived in Japan March 2020 right at the begining of the COVID-19 pandemic. The original plan was to take a team of our staff to install and commission units however due to the COVID-19 pandemic we had to utilise local contracors to work with our supervisors and project managers.
Two of our staff were overseas for a total of 9 months, 3 seperate trips and in addition to this they had to endure 3 seperate quarantine periods entering countries due to COVID-19 totalling an additional 6 weeks. Our team worked through multiple seasons on this project from snow days, rain days and 40 plus degree days.
Working overseas with a foreign team created some obstacles for our team to solve such as language barriers and our licenses not being recognised in Japan.
The project was completed to a high standard with no issues, the client was extremeley satisfied with the final product especially under the circumstances that we had to deliver in. Not even a global pandemic could stop us, the team came together and found a solution to get the project across the line.
