Although it’s been around for about 10 years, hot tapping has only just hit the Australian temporary HVAC market.
Active Air Rentals is of course leading the way with this new temporary HVAC method. Brad Sweeny, Director, explains what it is and why it’s of such value to clients.
Hot Tapping or Pressure Tapping is a way of connecting to existing chilled and hot water systems without interruption.
Brad explains, ‘When a chiller fails, or if it’s under capacity, temporary chillers need to be added into existing chilled water loops. In the past, that would have required closing down the plant, isolating the area where the new chiller would be connected, removing the water, plumbing in the temporary chiller then restarting the plant.
Temporary closures cost a lot of time and money. It is also a major problem for environments that must have air conditioning – such as medical, IT and some manufacturing.
So now clients can choose hot tapping to avoid all these problems.
Hot tapping is achieved by essentially creating a temporary loop for water to flow through while a new chiller is plumbed in. Once it is connected the water is re-diverted and the temporary loop removed.
For a video of how the process is done click here. This is hot tapping into a gas pipe but the concept is the same.
The key is that the system is always operational.
‘Hot tapping offers great value for money.’ Explains Brad. ‘As mentioned before, from an opportunity cost point of view, existing HVAC systems can stay online ensuring business continuity. This is vital for many organisations.
But from a tangible cost point of view it also makes a lot of sense. Installations are done during normal business hours so there are no after-hours fees or over-time costs.’
‘The other great thing about hot tapping is that once it’s done the temporary loop valves are there forever. So all future connections are quick and easy, again saving time and money and reducing problems in emergency situations.’
